About the event
Out of great tragedy comes a life-saving response.
In 2012, a mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School tragically claimed 20 children and eight adults. This led to the Hartford Consensus, a national panel that set a goal: improve survival in mass violence by empowering bystanders to take immediate life-saving action. From this, the STOP THE BLEED® campaign was launched in October 2015 to train the public in basic bleeding control techniques, giving everyone the skills to act before professional help arrives.
Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Canada’s first and largest trauma centre, brought STOP THE BLEED® to Canada in 2017. This course combines hands-on practice with instruction, teaching participants how to control bleeding using hands, dressings, and tourniquets. Specialized techniques, including wound packing and Combat Application Tourniquets, are included. Participants receive a certificate upon completion.
